About Us
Punta Clara (Spanish for "Point Clear") Kitchen was started in 1952 as a backyard hobby by Dorothy Brodbeck Pacey. The original kitchen was located in the back yard of the Pacey home, just one and a half miles down the road from its present location at Miss Colleen's house. The idea for her business began when a friend of Dorothy's suggested selling her delicious fig preserves rather than giving them away....and the idea grew. Fig Preserves and Pralines were the first products, and homemade cakes by order soon followed. The praline recipe was developed by Dorothy and her husband Paul, a chemical engineer, and her pralines remain the most sought after in the area.
As the business grew, Dorothy recruited help from all her family. Her daughter Susan and oldest son Paul began working part-time helping with all aspects of the business. Youngest son David, as well as grandchildren were available on demand, especially during the Christmas rush to meet the high demands of mail order and retail sales. The whole family also collaborated on Punta Clara's cookbook "The Black Kettle" which contains recipes from the candy kitchen as well as many family recipes and remembrances.
After more than 50 years of sweet success, Dorothy passed away in 2008, succumbing to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). By that time, her granddaughter Kim had joined Susan and Paul in managing and running the business. Today, Punta Clara has grown into a family-owned and operated business that now involves four generations of Paceys. Paul, Susan, and Kim attend to daily business, while daughter-in-law Susan (Paul's wife), works in the kitchen cooking and canning. Brandee (granddaughter-in-law) makes cakes and candy. The great-grandchildren - Emma, Griffin, Colleen, Sarah, Olivia, Minnie, and Thomas have served their time in the kitchen and with customers.
We've continued to try new recipes and add new specialty candies, and today we offer a variety of candies, jellies, preserves, pickles, relishes, and cakes. All of our products are made from scratch in small batches to ensure that homemade flavor and quality.
